Screenwriter Evan Daugherty on TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES

By:

Ever since his $3.2 million sale of the screenplay for Snow White and the Huntsman, screenwriter Evan Daugherty is making a name for himself in the world of young adult films. In less than four years, he’s also written Divergent and now Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

ScreenwritingU sat down with Daugherty to discuss how got the job he’s wanted since he was six years old.

“A friend and I made it a tradition to get out of school early on the Friday the Ninja Turtles movies came out,” Daugherty says of viewing the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle films. “I was obsessed with the Ninja Turtles when I was a kid.”

When Paramount called him up last Christmas and asked him if he liked Ninja Turtles, his life took a turn. He began preparing to pitch his take on the reboot of these beloved characters to the president of Paramount.

After just a few short years in Hollywood, Daugherty has his strategy down pat. He writes out his pitch, keeps the word count to 3,000 and talks for no more than 15 minutes. “I got really really nervous in pitches when I first started. That was my least favorite thing to do,” Daugherty says. He describes how tough it is to be good at writing and also to be animated in the room in front of the people you’re trying to impress. But Paramount loved it, and the film was off and running in a mere matter of months.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles released in theaters August 8 and stars Megan Fox and Will Arnett.
